#parts of Salzburg, faculties and favourite spots

Salzburg comprises of 24 urban districts. Can you name all of them? Although we’ve been living in Salzburg for quite some time, this is challenging for us. Here you can find a quiz created by that Fräulein Flora. Can you guess which city districts are meant?

Some of Salzburg’s urban districts include:

    • Aigen
    • Altstadt (Old Town)
    • Elisabeth-Vorstadt
    • Gneis
    • Kleßheim (to be precise, not quite a city district)
    • Lehen
    • Leopoldskron
    • Maxglan
    • Mülln
    • Neustadt (New Town) / Andräviertel
    • Nonntal
    • Schallmoos

You’ll surely find out the rest soon! Each urban district also has it’s own highlight they’re famous for. Have you ever been to Gnigler Krampuslauf, where you can marvel at the Krampuses from all over Salzburg in their intriciate and handmade costumes? Do you know in which urban districts faculties of the University of Salzburg are located? Or what else to explore?

We can wholeheartedly recommend Fräulein Flora’s guides for every urban district of Salzburg to find out more things to explore; for example, here you can find their Altstadt (Old Town) guide (only available in German).

We can also recommend residents’ service centres. As the name suggests, these centers offer great services, such as repair cafés. Skilled volunteers try to repair broken goods for free to fight throwaway-culture. These cafés are also great places to socialise with others, bring different cultures together and promote volunteer work.

The repair cafés are just one of the many great service provided by the residents’ service centers. They also offer free cargo bikest to rent and advice concerning topics waste sorting (they offer free bags for organic waste), communal gardens, etc.

    #faculties

Now back to the question of the University of Salzburg’s faculties. There are six of them! The NLW (Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences) in the South of Salzburg, the KW (Faculty of Arts & Humanities) in Nonntal, three in the city centre: the GW (Faculty of Social Sciences), the RWW (Faculty of Law, Business and Economics), and the KTH (The Faculty of Catholic Theology); and, the newest faculty in Itzling: the DAS (The Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences). Have you been to all of them?

Each of those faculties has its own library. We love visiting the different libraries, especially during exam season, to get a change of scenery and meet new people.

Here you can find all the different libraries and some images of the different faculties, which might become your favourite spots in the city.

    #favourite spots

Aside from the faculties, Salzburg has many other beautiful corners. From experience we can tell, that the prettiest ones are not necessarily found in travel guides, but recommended by friends and acquaintances. Here are some of them:

    Waldbad Anif & Almkanal

When the summer sun is burning, you need a place to cool off. Waldbad Anif and the Alm Canal are two great places for that! Located in the very South of Salzburg, next to the Salzach, Waldbad Anif is the perfect spot to let your mind wander. Besides the beautiful lake, you’ll also find a small restaurant and a rope course.  With the Bezirksgutscheinbuch (a voucher booklet for Salzburg) you’ll also get a discount when you visit it with another person.

Our tip: Follow Waldbad Anif on Instagram (@waldbad.anif) to get the latest news on events!
The Alm Canal is close to the Leopoldskroner Weiher, an important local and nature recreation area. At the Alm Canal, you’ll find a lawn for sunbathing, and a beautiful green-blue waterway. Its surf wave even makes it a hotspot for surfers! Since 2025, there has also been an Öklo, a sustainable public toilet, at this spot.

    “City Wall” Via Ferrata

Salzburg also has great offers for adrenaline enthusiasts. After tackling the rope course in Anif, you can continue with one in the city, the City Wall! It is located at the end of Linzer Gasse, next to the parking garage in Glockengasse – right in the heart of Salzburg. It boasts both amazing views and a sporty challenge. Once you’ve reached the end, you can simply walk back to Steingasse and stroll through the Old Town or along the Salzach.
It’s especially recommended to get on the via ferrata in the early hours of the morning and enjoy the extraordinary view over sleepy Salzburg.

    City Library in Lehen

You can not only find libraries at the University of Salzburg’s faculties but also in the city. The City Library (Stadtbibliothek) is a very modern building that invites you to browse through the shelves and lose yourself in a book. It has everything you can wish for, including cosy cold cinema chairs to sit in and even a Pac-Man machine (yes, it’s for kids, but are you ever too old for Pac-Man? 😊). As most public libraries in Austria, its services are free!

Another amazing thing about the City Library is that it’s home to a great #studyfriendlycafé with amazing views! Its glass windows allow for a 360 degree view of Salzburg, whilst sipping coffee or browsing through one’s library finds.
