#All about food

Cafeteria(Mensa)

The first place we think of when we’re hungry on a uni day: the cafeteria, for sure! There you can find quite inexpensive meals, a fair selection of different yummy food (always a vegetarian or vegan option) and good coffee!
The cafeteria situation is not the same in every faculty.
Here you can find the daily menu of the NLW and the RWW cafeteria, to plan your week food-wise.

Lunch planner

In case you want to spend your lunch break in the city, you’ve got loads of options. To get an overview, the lunch planner provided by the City of Salzburg can help you. It allows you to see the daily menu of many restaurants at a glance. Super convenient!

Markets

Our recommendation for those who value regionality: the local markets.

If you’re free on a Thursday morning, we can recommend the most famous market of Salzburg, called Schranne.
The market takes place every Thursday from 5 am to 1 pm, at Mirabell Square, in front of St. Andrew’s church. There, you can find everything your heart desires: organic and regional food, but also flowers and arts and crafts.

If you’re not free on Thursdays, you can also check out Grünmarkt (in the old town on Universitätsplatz), which is open daily. Every Friday from 6 am to 2 pm there is also a farmers’ market on Kajetanerplatz, where you can buy yummy organic products.

Admittedly, buying your food at a local market isn’t the cheapest option. However, browsing through the market, admiring the scents and colours, tasting different foods on the spot and, most importantly, chatting to the friendly vendors already makes the experience worthwhile.

Too good to go

Does food waste bother you? We get that! If you want to do something about it and you have nothing against surprises, the app Too good to go might be for you!

This app enables you to pick up surplus food from supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants – for a reduced price.

Another special feature: The offers are a bit of a mystery bag, since you never know exactly how much and what you’ll receive! Hence, every order is a small surprise.

We’ve picked up really great surprise bags from Nordsee, Hofer and other places. Unfortunately, on some occasions, we’ve not been that lucky! To sum up: A great idea and worth a try!

Fairteiler

A fridge in a university hallway? What might seem strange at first actually isn’t! Those are “Fairteiler” and can be found at the GW and NLW.
Sometimes you may be lucky and find yummy goods in there – if you do, you’re free to just take them with you. You can also bring food there yourself (of course only food that is still good to eat!), for example, if you’re about to go on holiday or received something that you don’t like. What a great way to reduce food waste!

Biokisten

Eating out every day can cost a pretty penny, and cooking can also be quite fun!

Have you ever tried organic veg boxes (Biokiste in German)? The advantage: You’ll get yummy organic food delivered right to your doorstep. Often you don’t know exactly what you’ll receive. This can motivate you to get creative in the kitchen and try out new veggies. Maybe a nice idea for your flat share?

Here you can find a link to a German Fräulein Flora article about different organic veg box services in Salzburg.
